About

Creature is a large-scale new ballet by choreographer Akram Khan, set in a decaying research facility at the North Pole where a military brigade subjects a mysterious being to intensive study. Driven by Vincenzo Lamagna’s stark, dark score and Tim Yip’s austere scenography, the work examines abandonment, isolation and the longing for connection, with formal echoes of Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The sound world—severe and elemental, with orchestration by James Keane under the musical direction of Gavin Sutherland—underpins a study of human limits under extreme conditions. The staging foregrounds tests of the creature’s mental and physical capacity to adapt to extreme cold, isolation and homesickness—qualities presented as critical for human colonisation of uncharted environments.
