This production marks the Japanese premiere of Tennessee Williams's classic The Glass Menagerie, directed by Ivo van Hove. Originally created for the Odéon-Théâtre de l'Europe in Paris (premiered March 2020), the staging features Isabelle Huppert as Amanda Wingfield. After two pandemic postponements, it opened the New National Theatre, Tokyo 2022/2023 Drama Season. Van Hove’s contemporary European approach frames Williams’s memory play with Jan Versweyveld’s design, where memory and reality blur and the characters’ psychological confinement is heightened. Performed in French and presented with English and Japanese surtitles, the Tokyo engagement offered a distinctive linguistic lens on an American classic.
