Sylvia is a pop opera created by Belgian theatre maker Fabrice Murgia, featuring music by pianist and singer-songwriter An Pierlé. The production is an original music-theatre project that explores the inner life of the American poet and essayist Sylvia Plath, who died by suicide in 1963. The staging is designed for a single female singer accompanied by fifteen women, creating a collective portrait of the artist. The production utilizes photographic images and a specific scenographic vision by Rudy Sabounghi to delve into the tragic documents of Plath's diaries. It seeks to capture the soul of the brilliant poet and her mental desperation, while also reflecting on other women in literature. The project is a co-presentation between La Monnaie / De Munt and several other Belgian and French cultural institutions.
