Andante cantabile is the second instalment of Theater & Orchester Heidelberg’s new Sunday-morning chamber concert series. Across five Sundays in the 2026/27 season, the Alter Saal opens at 11:00 for intimate chamber encounters with members of the Philharmonisches Orchester Heidelberg. The aim is to let audiences rediscover music for small forces, pairing beloved classics with fresh chamber discoveries. This second concert frames Beethoven’s String Quartet in F major, Op. 135—his last completed composition and final chamber work—alongside Brahms’s Piano Trio No. 3 in C minor, Op. 101, a piece the composer called one of his “favourite children.” Two cornerstones of the repertoire meet here for a contemplative Sunday morning, performed not by a guest ensemble but by soloists drawn from Heidelberg’s resident orchestra—placing them in direct contact with the audience in the intimate Alte Saal setting.
