Presented within American Classical Orchestra’s Season 42, Enlightenment is an intimate salon-style chamber concert and wine social at the Columbus Citizens Foundation townhouse (8 East 69th Street, New York). The historic Upper East Side setting evokes Classical-era domestic music-making, aligning with ACO’s period-instrument approach. The program pairs two cornerstones of the Classical repertoire: Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet in A major, K. 581—performed on basset clarinet by historical clarinet specialist Elise Bonhivert—and Haydn’s String Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 33, No. 2 “The Joke.” Heard on period instruments, both works highlight the nuance, articulation, and wit of late 18th-century style in an immersive, salon ambiance.
