NewWorks Theatre staged Alibi, a straight-faced murder mystery, in the intimate, 70-seat Picasso Room of the Horton Park Plaza Hotel in downtown San Diego. Eschewing the comedy-and-dinner format popular at the time, the production focused entirely on performance and the plot mechanics of the source material. Directed by Helen Reed Lehman, the show moved briskly to handle the heavy exposition required to compress an Agatha Christie novel into a two-hour play. The close quarters placed audiences near an 11-person cast, making every clue and bit of evidence visible and encouraging theatregoers to piece together the solution alongside the sleuth.
