Director Patricia McGregor’s staging of Place asks the audience to consider whether gentrification has been a protagonist or antagonist in their lives. The production begins with composer Ted Hearne addressing the intersections of privilege and appropriation in his own life and work, weighing a personal sense of place and space against inherited and generational realities. The work questions how whiteness functions as a learned performance. The creative process involved a volley of ideas between Hearne and librettist Saul Williams, who expanded and complicated Hearne’s original text to consider the experiences of others across the street, the globe, and time. The production features scenic design by Tim Brown and Sanford Biggers, with lighting design by Scott Bolman.
