Ted Brandsen’s full-length ballet tells the extraordinary life of Margaretha Geertruida Zelle, who reinvents herself in Paris as the exotic dancer and celebrity Mata Hari. With a new score by Tarik O’Regan, a scenario by Janine Brogt, striking sets by Clement & Sanôu and over 300 sumptuous costumes by François-Noël Cherpin, the work traces her meteoric rise, entanglement with power and espionage during the First World War, and tragic downfall. The 2021 revival ran 14 October–7 November at Dutch National Opera & Ballet (13 performances), duration 2 hours 10 minutes including one intermission.
