With breathtaking choreography, haute couture costumes, and an elegant scenography, ALICE leads us into a very particular Wonderland with a strange and deeply psychological atmosphere. A labyrinth of mirrors, artistic projections, and black-and-white ink drawings unite poetry and fairy tales as well as Western and Eastern cultures. In this international collaboration between Po-Cheng Tsai’s B. DANCE company and Kathleen McNurney’s Tanz Luzerner Theater, the choreographer reimagines this classic of children’s literature, where a fantastic, wondrous world meets the art of Zen. He combines East Asian dance styles with Western contemporary dance. The filmic score by Taiwanese sound designer Rockid Lee moves forward with a “metallic” drive. Acrobatics abound: legs flick like sharp folding knives, then flow again like gentle waves.
