Presented by Esprit Orchestra, this program explores intersections between visual art, literature, and sonic architecture. The concert takes its title from Philip Cashian’s commissioned work, the world’s turning, which meditates on momentum and stasis and borrows its title from William Boyd’s novel Waiting for Sunrise. Two world premieres (by Samuel Andreyev and Philip Cashian) and a Canadian premiere (by Daníel Bjarnason) anchor the evening’s commitment to new orchestral music. Andreyev’s The Flash of the Instant is described as a slashing, sparkling array of sonorities built from prismatic micro-variations rather than traditional development. Bjarnason’s Over Light Earth reflects on Abstract Expressionist canvases by Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock, deploying a stereo layout with pianos and percussion at opposite ends of the orchestra.
