Elaine Mitchener’s performance explores Walter Benjamin’s notion of Eingedenken—a historical consciousness in which the past is not closed or glorified but persists as an urgent presence. Unlike conciliatory Erinnerung, Eingedenken refuses reconciliation with past wrongs and remains faithful to historical suffering. Born in East London to Jamaican parents, Mitchener brings an acute awareness of post‑colonial wounds and discrimination to the work. the then + the now = now time is an artistic attempt to politicize the past: through interwoven music and movement, Mitchener seeks to undo and unsettle time and space, inhabiting remembrance as an act of responsibility that can be liberating and healing.
