Berlin-based Japanese composer Makiko Nishikaze expands the boundaries of the piano genre with this concert installation for nine pianos. Known for subtle musical experiments that unite performative, theatrical, and visual elements, Nishikaze created a unique ensemble concept in which nine pianists operate without a conductor or stopwatch. Ensemble interaction and musical progression are coordinated solely through listening. The sound of this temporary piano ensemble is articulated across the space, and the positioning and repositioning of the instruments forms an integral part of the composition. The instruments and players become actors in a shared sound space they themselves create.
