Travelling and Remaining (Norwegian: Det å reise, det å bli) is a site-specific soundwalk by Gyrid Nordal Kaldestad for the 2023 Ultima Festival. Experienced via the ECHOES interactive app with headphones, it delivers GPS-triggered audio as participants move through Akershus Fortress. The piece blends Kaldestad’s guiding voice with soundscapes and music to reflect on memory, home, and place. It invites listeners to reframe the fortress—once a site of darkness—as a space for contemplation within the city’s green lung. Sensory images of urban life—mango scents, traffic, chaos—contrast with moments of stillness. The work is self-guided, approximately 30 minutes, beginning at Karpedammen and ending at Rådhusbryggene.
