The Blind

The Blind is a radical, multisensory operatic experience that removes the visual element entirely. Audience members are blindfolded on entry and guided to their seats, remaining without sight for the entire performance of roughly sixty minutes. Director John La Bouchardière replaces visual cues with heightened sound, touch, and scent to immerse listeners in the world of the piece. Cold drafts, the rustle of leaves, and evocative smells such as incense and damp stone create a vivid environment. Twelve a cappella singers move throughout the space, sometimes encircling individual audience members to intensify presence and vulnerability. The staging turns physical blindness into a metaphor for the emotional and social blindness of today’s multitasking culture. As the senses recalibrate, the ear becomes the primary guide, and the audience experiences opera as proximity, breath, resonance, and human presence. The result is intimate, disorienting, and deeply affecting.
