Yosef and the Counseling Angel is a full-length Nativity oratorio that retells the Christmas story through the eyes of Yosef (Joseph). The piece follows his human and spiritual journey as he protects Mariam and their child, Yeshua, accepting a demanding calling that reshapes his life. Musically, it draws on sacred texts and medieval hymnody blended with original writing to bridge ancient tradition and contemporary storytelling. Scored for soloists and chorus with a chamber palette (flute, guitar, cello, organ), the premiere in Denver emphasized intimacy and reflection within a sacred setting. The work reimagines familiar texts such as the Magnificat and O Magnum Mysterium, placing them in the context of Yosef’s doubts, resolve, and embrace of fatherhood.
