THE BEGINNING is a contemporary performance piece created by the duo Bert & Nasi (Bertrand Lesca and Nasi Voutsas). The work explores beginnings—of their professional collaboration and their lives—through minimalist, emotionally resonant staging that blends physical theatre, dialogue, and choral elements. A distinctive feature is a local chorus of 15 non-professional participants aged 60+, whose presence brings a generational perspective to themes of starting over and time’s passage. Developed during a residency at Staatstheater Mainz with technical rehearsals in early 2023, the production premiered in autumn. The artistic team includes “Outside Eye” Tim Etchells and choreographer Laura Dannequin, with sound design by Ben Osborn. Designed as a touring work, it adapts to different venues while keeping its core focus on the interplay between the two lead performers and a locally assembled chorus.
