The opera Zinaida completes a triptych devoted to Russian poets of the 20th century: Anna Akhmatova, Marina Tsvetaeva, and Zinaida Gippius. Unlike the first two works, conceived as monodramas, Zinaida is a chamber opera for three soloists. We encounter the trio Gippius–Merezhkovsky–Filosofov in Warsaw in 1920, shortly before Filosofov’s final departure and the dissolution of their partnership. The subtitle of the opera, “The Gentle Cobra,” quotes a line from the poem Pain: ...
