Adalmina’s Pearl

This production of Adalmina’s Pearl is a children’s opera by composer and librettist Hrayr Khanedanyan, a professor at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory and a vocal coach at the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers. Written in 2010, the opera is based on a French folk tale that teaches mercy, care, and the idea that a kind heart is more valuable than wealth and power. The story has a history in Russian theatre: a dramatic play version opened the Natalia Sats Children’s Theatre in 1921, and a filmstrip of the same name was released in 1980. This Mariinsky production, directed by Alexander Maskalin with musical direction by Larisa Gergieva, brings the moral tale to life for a young audience, featuring performers from the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers. The performance lasts one hour and is presented without an interval.
