This concert opened Soundstreams’ 2014/2015 Main Stage season with three works that explore landscape and seasonality: John Luther Adams’ arctic-inspired Dream in White on White, the world premiere of Paul Frehner’s Mojave Dreaming, and the Toronto premiere of Max Richter’s Recomposed: Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Internationally acclaimed violinist Daniel Hope appeared as soloist in the Richter concerto, with Joaquin Valdepenas conducting the Virtuoso String Orchestra. Artistic Director Lawrence Cherney framed the evening around “the seasons” as powerful markers of change in our lives, while the program traced sonic portraits from the Alaskan tundra to the Mojave Desert and a radical reimagining of Vivaldi’s iconic cycle.
