Elisabeth Stoeppler directs a new staging at Theater an der Wien that embraces the opera’s dream logic, presenting Alice’s journey as an interminable encounter with herself. The Austrian premiere is presented in cooperation with Wien Modern and uses Lloyd Moore’s reduced orchestration, prepared in association with the composer. The production highlights the work’s kaleidoscopic sonorities, surreal tone, and shifting colors.
