This special concert celebrates the 50th anniversary of Ntozake Shange’s seminal choreopoem, “for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf.” Presented as part of the 2026 American Songbook series curated by Clint Ramos, the event unveils a reimagined musical treatment conceived by composer Natalie Brown and director Ellenore Scott, developed in collaboration with Lincoln Center Visionary Artist Jeanine Tesori. The new score sets Shange’s powerful text to song, weaving melodies into the work’s original rhythm and language to reveal fresh points of access for contemporary audiences. Honoring the groundbreaking impact of the 1976 original, this concert reframes a major American cultural legacy and explores how music can deepen the resonance of world-changing words. Recommended for ages 13 and older; ASL interpretation will be provided.
