Women is a dance production by Sasha Waltz & Guests created with an all-women ensemble. It brings 20 female dancers together with Sasha Waltz to explore rituals of femininity and associated images of the body. The work premiered on 30 August 2017 as part of Tanz im August, the 29th International Festival Berlin. St. Elisabeth Church functions as an architectural and spatial component: dancers and audience occupy the same level in an empty space rather than facing one another in a conventional frontal theatre arrangement. The concept draws partly on Judy Chicago's feminist artwork The Dinner Party (1979). It is Sasha Waltz's first choreography created exclusively with female dancers. Stage design is by Sasha Waltz and Thomas Schenk, costumes by Christine Birkle, lighting by Martin Hauk, repetition by Michal Mualem, and music by Soundwalk Collective. The production was made by Sasha Waltz & Guests in cooperation with Kultur Büro Elisabeth, presented by Tanz im August, and supported by the Schering Stiftung.
