The Royal Shakespeare Company’s Matilda the Musical is a multi-award-winning stage adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved book. Developed by the RSC, it premiered in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2010 before transferring to London’s Cambridge Theatre in 2011. The design uses the alphabet as a playful building block of the set, supporting imaginative storytelling and kinetic staging. The production incorporates immersive theatrical elements including flashing lights, lasers, loud sound effects, stage haze, and popping balloons, with occasional actor interaction in audience spaces. Directed by Matthew Warchus with choreography by Peter Darling, the show balances Dahl’s darker, rebellious streak with exuberant musical numbers. The result is a witty, high-energy production that speaks to both children and adults.
