Set in a basement basketball court at a local recreation center in Ohio, Liberation shifts fluidly between the present and the 1970s. David Zinn’s scenic design evokes a lovingly detailed vintage gym, complete with white brick, hoop, banners, and a clock that marks changing years. Under Whitney White’s direction, the ensemble operates as a single, organic unit while allowing each character’s voice to surface in piercing monologues. Qween Jean’s era-true costumes—especially denim—root the story in its time. The production balances the intimacy of a consciousness-raising circle with the scale of a Broadway house, breaking the fourth wall via a narrator who bridges then and now. It contains adult language and nudity and employs herbal cigarettes and haze effects.
