Renato Zanella’s ballet to music by Sergei Prokofiev presents a modern reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s classic. Described by the choreographer as “sumptuous and thrilling, both traditional and modern,” the production is the fruit of decades of creative reflection. A native of Verona, Zanella found the ideal conditions in Ljubljana to realize his personal vision of Romeo and Juliet. Technically demanding yet free, the show promises a powerful emotional river that transcends time. Alessandro Camera’s scenography offers sensual elegance that matches Zanella’s imagery, with vivid costumes by Alexandra Burgstaller. Sets and costumes were crafted by the workshops of SNG Opera and Ballet Ljubljana and SNG Drama Ljubljana. Lighting is by Jasmin Šehić. Tatjana Azman’s dramaturgy relocates the action to a contemporary Verona with modern references, including a club party. The production balances fresh settings with respect for dance technique and history, showcasing the young company’s potential.
