A seemingly idyllic rural village life by day and, in parallel, an eerie ghostly dance at night: these two realities shape the action on stage in Giselle. The production contrasts the vibrant, earthly existence of the peasants with the ethereal, dangerous realm of the Wilis. The stage design and costumes for this production were created by Peter Farmer, complementing the classic choreographic lineage. For the 2017 performances, the Bayerisches Staatsballett presented the acclaimed version choreographed by Peter Wright, based on the original 19th-century choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot and its later development by Marius Petipa. This staging preserves the romantic essence and technical demands of the historic ballet while delivering a profound emotional narrative.
