Victory Over the Sun is a reconstruction of the Russian cubo-futurist opera of 1913 by Moscow's Stas Namin Theatre. Conceived by painter Kazimir Malevich, poet Aleksei Kruchenykh, and composer Mikhail V. Matyushin, with a prologue by Velimir Khlebnikov, it premiered in St. Petersburg announcing the annihilation of obsolete earthly logic—symbolized by the Sun—in favor of futurist chaos and speed. Its staging was revolutionary: the torn curtain and Malevich’s Black Square heralded Suprematism. The work’s experimental language fuses real and invented words, flips genders of nouns, and fractures syntax like Cubist painting. This Ravenna Festival presentation marked the Italian premiere of the 2013 Stas Namin Theatre reconstruction, previously seen in Basel and Paris. The production revives the work’s radical spirit for contemporary audiences while honoring its historic visual and sonic shock.
