This production of Fantasio marks the Swedish premiere of Offenbach's opéra comique, staged in the atmospheric courtyard of Läckö Castle. Director Melker Sørensen and costume designer Anna Ardelius transpose the story to a Shakespearean future shaped by the aftermath of a devastating war. In this concept, the arranged marriage between Princess Elsbeth and the Prince of Mantua is a fragile bid for peace, while Fantasio’s journey as a jester questions authority and social order. The set embraces the castle’s architecture, and Christian Dahlqvist’s lighting responds to the changing summer evening light. The staging emphasizes the work’s tender blend of melancholy and humor, probing the tension between personal dreams and civic duty, and between retaliation and magnanimity. Musically, the 1872 Paris version is performed in Tor Lind’s Swedish translation, with Henrik Torolphi’s arrangement tailored to the Läckö Chamber Orchestra and the open-air space.
