The world premiere of a large-scale multi-movement work for chorus, soloists, and orchestra by Canadian composer Brian Current (winner of the Jules Léger Prize for New Chamber Music). Part of the Vancouver Opera Festival. The River of Light explores transcendence through texts from Hindu, Christian, Hebrew, Indigenous Canadian, Islamic, Secular, and Chinese philosophical traditions, inspired by Dante’s Paradiso: “And I saw a light in the form of a river, radiant as gold.” The score ranges from lyrical passages to vivid outbursts of color and rhythm and uses extended techniques. Presented in co-production with the Vancouver Bach Choir; conducted by Leslie Dala, featuring Yulanda M. Faris Young Artists Program alumni Caitlin Wood and Martin Renner-Wallace. World premiere performance on 3 May 2019, 7:30 pm at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Vancouver.
