“Tales of A. S. Pushkin” is a cycle of musical performances by Anton Viskov in which the composer sets the complete texts of the poet’s fairy tales. The work that opens the cycle, “The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish,” is defined by the author as a chamber opera-ballad. Alongside Pushkin’s text, the piece incorporates fragments of the Brothers Grimm tale “Of the Fisherman and His Wife,” recorded in the Low Pomeranian dialect after the manuscript of Philipp Otto Runge. As the Pomeranian tale is set in the Wolgast region, the work’s two principal musical themes bear the stylistic features of West-European ballad songs. The tale will be performed with piano, percussion and flute, with the composer himself appearing as narrator. Recommended for ages 6+.
