Directed by Madison Mae Williams, this staging of Just the Two of Us centers human bonds—who we connect with throughout our lives and how love and caretaking shape those connections. The vision highlights intersecting themes of motherhood, daughterhood, Blackness, and womanhood. The production moves fluidly through time, shifting between present and past. Through shared memories between Lady of Mind and Bean, it reflects on family, legacy, mortality, and the weight of striving for excellence. The piece is framed by questions about the covenant between mothers and daughters, the American Dream, and recognizing our forever friends. Sonia Sanchez’s poem Belly, Buttocks, and Straight Spines informs the conceptual framework and is echoed in the director’s notes.
