Premiered in 2025 in Madrid, this new production intertwines two popular 19th‑century works by Francisco Asenjo Barbieri: the comic zarzuela The Viscount and the lyric‑comic interlude A Cat for a Hare. Under Alfonso Romero’s stage direction, the love‑triangle plot of the interlude—featuring two noblewomen—interweaves with The Viscount, which tells of a nobleman who must defy his fate of becoming a priest in order to flee with his beloved. It is a mischievous, sharp‑edged staging in which cross‑dressed singers enable a biting critique of double standards.
