Landestheater Detmold’s staging of Der kleine Prinz is a contemporary theatrical interpretation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic, created for young audiences (ages 5+) while preserving the story’s philosophical depth. Directed by Christina Gegenbauer, the production blurs boundaries between childhood and adulthood and serves as a plea for friendship and humanity. The visual and sonic world is shaped by set designer Frank Albert, costume designer Jule Dohrn-van Rossum, lighting designer Udo Groll, and composer Laura Winkler. Stroboscopic lighting effects are used to heighten the cosmic atmosphere of the Prince’s interplanetary travels and are noted for photosensitive viewers. The ensemble performs with high versatility: aside from the Little Prince, actors fluidly switch between the Pilot, the Fox, the Rose, and the planetary inhabitants, reinforcing the dreamlike, episodic nature of the journey.
