Opera in Concert (also known under its concert series name "Voicebox") presented Mascagni's L'amico Fritz as a concert performance — without sets, costumes, or staging accoutrements — focusing on the singing voice in its purest form. The Toronto-based company, founded by Stuart Hamilton, has been producing rare and lesser-performed operatic works in this semi-staged format since 1974. The February 1989 performance was part of the company's regular concert season at the Jane Mallett Theatre, the principal venue of the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts.
