The rock musical “Spring Awakening” tells the story of a group of young people and the thrilling upheavals of growing up, their curiosity about sex, and the incomprehension of the adult world. Prevailing bourgeois sexual morality puts them under such pressure that it ultimately leads to catastrophe. Since 1891 — the year of its creation — the story has lost none of its relevance or power. Markus Schneider directs with the young people of the children’s and youth choir “Belcanto.” Through a casting process, the project goes directly into the city’s schools to cast instruments and roles with teenagers from diverse social and cultural backgrounds. Supported by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the project also places emphasis on sustainable production.
