In the 1790s Warsaw was politically aflame: the specter of further partitions loomed as the first modern European constitution emerged and a public theater took shape at the royal court. In this climate, Bogusławski’s cheerful moralizing vaudeville with music by Jan Stefani (1794) inevitably stirred debate. Open suddenly to broad audiences regardless of origin or means, the story was read as an allegory of current politics. Though original contexts have faded, Krakowiacy i Górale became a template for later Polish operas and remains a cornerstone without which works like The Haunted Manor or King Roger would be unthinkable. Today the piece sounds different and speaks anew, yet Poland’s history shows it stays strikingly relevant while serving as a vivid document of its era. This production was realized as part of the centennial celebrations of Poland’s regained independence.
