Martha: A Story From Missolonghi

A musicopoetic work by composer Nikos Xydakis and poet-playwright Dionysis Kapsalis, Martha: A story from Missolonghi was presented by the Greek National Opera on the Alternative Stage of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, with performances recorded on 7 and 8 May 2021 at 20:30 for streaming on GNO TV due to pandemic restrictions. Drawing on fragments of Dionysios Solomos’ The Free Besieged and the Memoirs of Nikolaos Kasomoulis, the work focuses on the Third Siege and Exodus of Missolonghi through the eyes of the besieged women. The creative team included Kapsalis (libretto) and Vassilis Kehagias (video and visual material). The performers featured Irini Derebei, Tassis Christoyannis, the Pleiades Vocal Group, POLIS Ensemble, with Neoklis Neophytides (piano, voice) and Sofia Efklidou (violoncello).
