Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny is one of the most radical music-theatre works of the twentieth century, in which librettist Bertolt Brecht and composer Kurt Weill not only expose the pitfalls of social coexistence but also question the operatic genre itself. Musically, Weill bridges contemporary popular styles and operatic tradition. In Barrie Kosky’s staging, the city of Mahagonny becomes a kaleidoscope of human failings. In the middle of the desert, three fugitives found the city of Mahagonny. In this “paradise city,” life follows its own rules—financed by passing men from the gold coast. Eating, loving, boxing, and drinking are the order of the day. But the idyll soon totters: natural disasters, excess, violence, and corruption push the project to its limits.
