Tango is a landmark contemporary ballet created at the Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Maribor in 1998 as Edward Clug’s choreographic debut. Revived often for Slovenian and international audiences, it explores the deeper psychological and emotional currents of tango beyond ballroom conventions. Clug’s vision strips away cliché to return the dance to the streets of memory and desire, telling the story of the tango we carry within ourselves through interlaced dramatic scenes. The staging is spare yet striking, with Marko Japelj’s scenography and Leo Kulaš’s costumes framing the dancers’ bodies and interactions. The result is an intense, atmospheric 55‑minute experience, focused on human tension and intimacy rather than showmanship. Its longevity in the repertoire speaks to the universality of its concept and the enduring power of its original creation.
