Georges Lavaudant, a long-time artistic partner of anthéa, takes on Molière’s most complex and nuanced play, Le Misanthrope. After his powerful stagings of Seneca’s Phèdre two seasons ago and Kafka’s A Report to an Academy last season, he brings his signature clarity and precision to this classic. The production features a stripped-back, minimalist staging that focuses on the central performance of Éric Elmosnino as Alceste. Through him, the play exposes a disillusioned truth, denouncing the hypocrisy and lies embedded in social relations. Lavaudant probes the inner thoughts and contradictions of each character in this comedy of manners, arguing with force that absolute truth does not exist. A post-show discussion with the artistic team is planned after the November 5 performance.
