David Dawson created METAMORPHOSIS as a five-part choreographic work set to Philip Glass’s Metamorphosis piano pieces. Made for Dutch National Ballet and adapted during pandemic restrictions with remote rehearsals, the work was filmed on the stage of Het Muziektheater and directed for camera by Altin Kaftira. Visual design features white costumes (Eddie Grundy with Dawson) and sculptural lighting by Bert Dalhuysen, with ballet mastery and rehearsal support from Charlotte Chapellier, Raphaël Coumes‑Marquet, and Rebecca Gladstone. Pianist Olga Khoziainova performs Glass’s score for the film. Thematically, Dawson frames the piece as about hope and humanity—finding light in darkness—using the film medium’s intimacy and close framing to reveal texture, line, and emotion across its five sections.
