Tamás Mester’s staging at Theater Hof uses a minimalist yet striking set by Annette Mahlendorf, dominated by a large metallic Z on a revolve that bursts into flames at the end of Act I. Vivid folkloric costumes for villagers and Gitanos contrast the grey steel structure. Musically, the Hofer Symphoniker under Michael Falk, joined by a band, propel the show. Large ensemble scenes weave in the Opera Chorus as the village community and the Theater Hof Ballet as Gitanos with energetic flamenco choreography. Special care was given to stage combat, with dedicated fight training. Lighting and shadow play heighten emotion, for instance during Luisa’s sea voyage to California. Despite intense moments, the direction embraces entertainment, with Diego/Zorro portrayed at times with humorous, slightly exaggerated traits.
