Bona Sforza

Bona Sforza is a new contemporary opera in two acts about Queen Bona of Aragon, co-produced by the Kraków Opera and Fondazione Teatro Petruzzelli. The staging portrays Bona’s life and era while fostering cultural ties between Małopolska and Apulia. Three distinct incarnations of Bona—princess, queen, and widowed exile—are each sung by a different soloist in different languages (Italian, Polish, Latin). Director Michał Znaniecki uses sliding walls to divide the stage into three zones, with elegant period costumes and refined, projection-based scenography. The world premiere took place on 9 November 2024 at the Kraków Opera under Piotr Sułkowski. The work returns in the Opera’s 2026/2027 season.
