The 2010 “Examen” program by Le Balcon is a mixed contemporary music concert anchored by the Examen scene from Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Donnerstag aus Licht. Presented at Église Saint-Merry in Paris, the event marked an early milestone in Le Balcon’s long-term exploration of Stockhausen’s Licht cycle. The concert combines complex spatial sound projection and computer music realization with a large acoustic ensemble of strings, winds, brass, percussion, and piano. A distinctive artistic feature is the triadic embodiment of the hero Michaël in Stockhausen’s scene: a tenor, a trumpeter, and a dancer portray the character simultaneously. This multidisciplinary approach demands exact coordination between musical direction, sound engineering, and stage management. The production laid the groundwork for Le Balcon’s later comprehensive engagement with the entire Licht cycle.
