Directed by Richard Baird, this staging of Christopher Marlowe’s Renaissance-era drama marked the largest production in Diversionary Theatre’s history, with 15 actors in an intimate 104-seat space. Matt Scott’s minimalist scenic design used tapestries and curtains to create fluid entrances and swift shifts between clandestine meetings and broadsword battles. The direction emphasized text, character, and visceral stage combat over sensuality, differentiating it from more erotic interpretations. Full-cast sword combat, devised by Jeff Anthony Miller, and inventive depictions of the play’s brutal slayings delivered kinetic impact. Authentic period costumes by Howard Schmitt and vivid lighting by Michelle Caron grounded the 14th-century world. Kevin Anthenill’s sound design and original music deepened the atmosphere and narrative momentum.
