The Breaking Boundaries concert by the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus presents a diverse program that bridges 20th‑century masters with contemporary living composers. The concert opens with Frank Zappa’s Dupree’s Paradise, highlighting the iconic musician’s connection to San Diego and his modernist classical influences. The program also features works by Ferruccio Busoni and Jean Sibelius, representing established 20th‑century repertoire. A central element of the production is the world premiere of Hannah Wolkowitz’s Breaking Boundaries, commissioned as part of the Luna Composition Lab’s 10th anniversary (Luna Lab@10), celebrating and supporting young female, nonbinary, and gender‑nonconforming composers. Additionally, the concert includes Adam Schoenberg’s Automation, a cello concerto that explores the relationship between humans and technology, featuring soloist Peter Ko on both cello and the unique halldorophone instrument.
