Eighteen-century religious institutions made Christmas a moment of intense connection with the divine. Magnificat is the musical representation of the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin, marking the start of Advent. Georg Philipp Teleman, a prominent late Baroque composer, wrote Magnificat in C for a larger orchestra, in a manifestation of joy for a season of intense devotion and community connection. Johann Sebastian Bach’s motets demonstrate the composer’s mastery of the sacred choral polyphony of the age, using expressive mechanisms that underline the deep meaning of its texts. Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major is one of the composer’s better-known works, synthesising the musical language of the period in a unique style. Christmas is also marked by instrumental music, as evidenced by Italian composer Pietro Antonio Locatelli’s Concerto Grosso in F Minor.
