The musical is based on the incident of the RMS Titanic sinking on its maiden voyage on April 15, 1912. It premiered on April 23, 1997 on Broadway where it was performed over 800 times and won five Tony Awards. Coincidentally, James Cameron's epic film version of the story premiered in December of that year. Although the musical and the film are based on the same historical event, the plot is not the same in the two works. Yeston's musical will have its Swedish premiere at Wermland Opera on September 29, 2022.
