Programmed to mark the centenary of the end of World War I and the formation of the Royal Air Force, this special concert screening opened the orchestral strand of the 2018–19 Kirklees Concert Season, a collaboration between Kirklees Council and Opera North. The 1927 silent film Wings, famed for its white‑knuckle aerial combat scenes filmed with the actors in flight, was brought vividly to life by Carl Davis’s dramatic 1993 score, performed live in sync by the Orchestra of Opera North. For this commemorative event, composer Carl Davis CBE conducted his own music. A pre‑concert “Talking Music” session at 18:10 offered audiences further context for the landmark film and its live accompaniment.
