Lux Eterna! This year’s festival theme also provides the foundation for our closing concert, featuring two of the most profoundly beautiful requiems ever written: those by the French composers Maurice Duruflé and Gabriel Fauré. A requiem is a mass for the dead, and many might associate it with drama and sorrow. That’s certainly true of Mozart’s or Verdi’s requiems, which are filled with emotional intensity. But in the hands of Duruflé and Fauré, the music turns toward light and beauty. Who says death must only be dark and heavy? These composers offer a sense of peace, reassurance, and quiet radiance. The festival and the concert both end with the sound of angels. Gabriel Fauré’s In Paradisum sends us gently out of the world of the festival and back into life. The performance features the Oslo Domkor with cathedral organist Marcus André Berg, joined by soloists Berit Norbakken, Marianne Beate Kielland, and Aleksander Nohr.
